Masked man rapes 70-year-old Bronx woman at gunpoint, suspect caught on video lurking in building
An armed man sporting two plastic masks raped a 70-year-old woman in her Bronx apartment building, police said Tuesday.
The woman was entering her building in Belmont about 2 a.m. on July 27 when the suspect, his face covered with black and red masks, grabbed her from behind. He pulled a gun on the senior and forced her into a nearby stairwell, where he sexually assaulted and raped her at gunpoint, cops said.
The suspect ran off a few minutes later, police said.
The victim went to her apartment, but didn’t call authorities until Monday after taking a private ambulance to the BronxCare Health System for a medical check-up, police said.
The NYPD’s Bronx Special Victims Squad is investigating. No arrests have been made.
Detectives canvassing the building recovered surveillance images of the suspect before he put on his masks.
The video shows the man, wearing a black du-rag and a hooded sweatshirt, pulling a silver firearm from his pants as he walks up the stairs toward the victim, his red mask in his hand.
When he left the building, he had already taken off his sweatshirt and stepped out into the night wearing a white T-shirt, the video shows.
As of Sunday cops were investigating a 3% jump in rapes this year, from 817 to 842, officials said.
The suspect in the July 27 attack is described as black, about 5-foot-8, 170 pounds with a slim build.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
