2 dead, 4 injured in multi-vehicle crash in Washington Heights
Two people were killed and four others injured in a crash in Washington Heights which may have involved a stolen vehicle.
It happened around 6:45 a.m. Monday at Audubon Avenue and West 179th Street.
A Hyundai Elantra, which police believe was stolen at the end of June, was traveling northbound on Audubon when it collided with a Jeep going west on 179th.
Video from news helicopters showed the Jeep overturned and a second vehicle, possibly the Elantra, knocked onto the sidewalk.
Five people were in the Elantra at the time. Two of them were pronounced dead at New York Presbyterian-Columbia.
A third person was in critical condition at the same hospital.
Two others in the Hyundai were taken to Harlem Hospital, where one is in critical condition, and the other is stable.
The 53-year-old driver of the Jeep was also taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
The occupants of the Elantra are all believed to be young adults.
Two other vehicles involved in the crash were believed to have been parked at the time they were struck.
NYPD investigators are working to determine what led to the crash.
