New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday there are now 73 reported cases of severe illness in children that may be linked to coronavirus.

A 5-year-old boy died in New York City Thursday from COVID-19-related complications, Cuomo said, while Westchester County health officials announced Friday that a child being treated for a mystery illness believed to be linked to the coronavirus has also died.

Cuomo added the state is investigating several other deaths.

“We didn’t think children would suffer from it,” Cuomo said. “It’s something we have to consider seriously now.”

Cuomo also reported 216 deaths Thursday as hospitalizations and ICU admissions continue a long, slow decline.
