Family reveals cause of death of Emily Mitchell, Instagram influencer who died ‘unexpectedly’ while pregnant with 5th child

The family of a pregnant social media influencer who died suddenly three days before Christmas has revealed her cause of death.

Emily Mitchell, the creator of the parenting, farmhouse living and Christian blog and Instagram page “The Hidden Way” died of a pulmonary embolism, according to the state Medical Examiner’s Office, her family said Tuesday in an update to her GoFundMe page.

“Although it is challenging to wrap our heads around how this could have happened, we know all first responders and medical personnel did everything they could to help, and therefore we are certain that it was simply her time,” her husband Joseph and her daughters, Finn, Isla, Edie and Luna, wrote. “The Lord was calling her home,” they added.

The family expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of love and support in the wake of the sudden passing on of our beloved Emily and baby Joey.”

Mitchell was expecting her fifth child, to be named Joey.

“Words can’t describe how meaningful your words, gestures, expressions, and encouragement have been to us,” the family wrote.

The 36-year-old Rhode Island resident was having breakfast on the morning of Dec. 22 when she “suddenly became unresponsive,” according to the fundraising page set up earlier this month in support of the Mitchell family.

According to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs.

“Although anyone can develop a blood clot, women are at higher risk for a blood clot during pregnancy, childbirth, and up to 3-months after delivering a baby,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. “In fact, pregnant women are 5 times more likely to experience a blood clot compared with women who are not pregnant.”

An online obituary described Mitchell as “a loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister” who was “beautiful inside and out” and who “had an infectious smile and a kind, compassionate spirit.”

In “The Hidden Way,” she talked about her faith, family life and homeschooling her four children — a legacy which her husband is determined to keep alive.

“We will continue our commitment to homeschool in the same spirit and vision that Emily was so passionate about, and we are looking forward to learning how best to continue sharing what the kids and I are up to on Instagram,” he wrote.
